Guide for Field Inspection of In-Service Fiber Reinforced, Polymer Reinforced/Strengthened Concrete Bridge Elements

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-21-0048
Project Abstract:

This project will develop the framework of a unified and uniform guide for Inspection and coding assessment of in-service fiber reinforced polymer/reinforced strengthened concrete (FRP-RSC) bridge elements. Framework will address needs for inspection and coding methods conforming with National Bridge Inspection Standard (NBIS) for both FRP reinforced structures (FRP internal reinforced bars or strands) and FRP strengthened structures (FRP external application).

Project Outputs:

Technical report.

Project Outcomes/Impact:

The outcome of this project will be a unified guide for inspection of in-service fiber reinforced polymer- reinforced/strengthened concrete (FRP-RSC) bridge elements. The guide will also include provisions for condition ratings compatible with the National Bridge Inventory (NBI) scales, and can be used to develop training material for practicing engineers and inspectors. The guide can be readily used by inspectors and practitioners, and will alleviate the concerns by bridge owners of uncertainties associated with condition assessment of bridges using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) and their maintenance.
