Geometric Design Laboratory (GDL) 2

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-19-0083
Project Abstract:

The mission of the Geometric Design Laboratory (GDL) is to support the Office of Safety Research and Development (R&D) in research related to the geometric design of roadways and the impacts on safety. Historically, this has included support for the full life cycle of software development, and technology facilitation for the Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM) as well as coordination of IHSDM with related tools including the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Safety Analyst, the AASHTO Highway Safety Manual (HSM), and with other members of the IHSDM team. The laboratory is located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) in McLean, Virginia.

The GDL provides technical support to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in IHSDM software development and technology facilitation, including conducting internal testing of alpha and beta versions of IHSDM software, finalizing functional specifications for each IHSDM module, managing end-user beta testing, and providing technical support and training to IHSDM users.

The GDL also provides technical assistance in support of the HSM and related tools. This includes participation in highway safety research that supports the development of further capabilities in the HSM. In addition, the GDL has served as the primary technical assistance resource for end users of the HSM. This includes support services to State and other agencies in their efforts to implement the HSM, developing case studies focusing on methods included in the HSM, presenting on relevant HSM implementation topics at conferences, and supporting FHWA’s HSM marketing efforts.
