Development Length of Reinforcing Bars in Field-Cast Grouts

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-13-0085
Project Abstract:

This research project aims to develop prescriptive relationships that allow bridge owners and designers to detail prefabricated bridge elements and systems (PBES) connections using lap spliced reinforcing bars embedded in advanced field-cast grout materials. The study includes mild steel reinforcing bars, epoxy-coated bars, high-strength bars, and fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. The field-cast grouts will include ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), epoxy grout, conventional grout, and potentially other emerging materials. Parameters include embedment length, cover, bar size, grout age/strength, and distance to adjacent bar. All tests will be static pullout tests with the spliced reinforcing bars being in a tension/tension configuration. The results of this study will allow for the broader deployment of PBES systems through the development of simplified connection details that accelerate construction and lower costs.

Goals:

The objective of this research project is to develop quantitative engineering relationships between embedment length of reinforcing bars in emerging field-cast grouts and the strength that can be developed in the bars.
