Development and Calibration of an Active Vision Model to Explore Relationships Between Nighttime Driving Behavior and Roadway Visibility Features

Project Information

Project ID:
FHWA-PROJ-08-0071
Project Abstract:

This research integrates new technology into the development of a dynamic driver visual model. Three fundamental functionalities must be considered when developing the model.
(1) The first is the technical hurdle of developing a driver monitoring system where both the luminance of the visual environment and the driver behavior can be captured. This will require combining two existing systems—an infrared eye tracker and a dynamic photometer—into a unified system that also links to in-vehicle instrumentation.
(2) The second is the development of a model framework. For the model to be both comprehensive and usable, but still related to the human visual system, careful consideration must be given to how the statistics and rules are developed.
(3) The final consideration pertains to the data collection methods and the statistical analyses. Data collection must be integrated with both the model framework and the driver monitoring system.
