Project Description: 

Project team members were sought and then invited to participate and to represent the United States, albeit informally, in this emerging international collaboration; in the subsequent meetings (Stockholm, October 2009; Amsterdam, March 2010); and were continued to be invited. These interactions provide value to all participants. The cross-fertilization with significant expertise from three key regions of the world represents a very significant leveraging opportunity for all and provides the Applications for the Environment: Real-Time Information Synthesis (AERIS) program with a rich opportunity to support its first three tracks since these tracks agree with this burgeoning international collaboration.  These tracks are: establish foundation, identify candidate strategies, and analyze and evaluate candidate strategies. The objectives for this project are to:Prepare for and attend the late October 2010 international workshop on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), energy efficiency, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission of transport held in Tokyo, Japan, representing the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) as contractors. This will demonstrate the commitment of the United States to the international community and support technical experts to bring back lessons learned to the AERIS program and recommendations for further participation in such international activities. Develop a report and action plan based on the October 2010 meeting (and prior meetings) for the USDOT to consider. These efforts will show the world the interest and commitment of the USDOT, and capture observations and knowledge, plus a set of technical recommendations on how to proceed on both the international front and some lessons learned for tracks one to three of the AERIS program plan.


Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications and operating strategies using connected vehicle technologies can significantly improve environmental performance in terms of emissions, Greenhouse Gas (GHG), and energy consumption.
