New Research
The following new research studies reported by the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Office of Research and Development are sponsored in whole or in part with federal highway funds. For further details on a particular study, please contact Bob Bryant, editor of Public Roads, (202) 493-3468.
NCP Category B--Traffic Operations/Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems
B.1: Advanced Traffic Management Systems
Title: Models to Simulate IVHS Operations
Objective: To modify existing traffic models to simulate IVHS operations such as real-time control strategies, route guidance capabilities, real-time graphic displays, environmental and safety measures of effectiveness, effects of invehicle navigation systems, probe vehicle/path selection capabilities, and user interfaces. As a minor effort, this activity will also examine the feasibility and applicability of incorporating advanced analytic techniques (such as image processing, neural networks, parallel processing, control theory, and real-time distribution systems) into the models.
Contractor: Kamal Sciences Corporation
Expected Completion Date: February 1999
Estimated Cost: $2,007,445
NCP Category C--Pavements
C.3: Field and Laboratory Test Methods
Title: Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) II
Objective: To fabricate a second Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) to provide additional accelerated testing capability at the Pavement Testing Facility.
Contractor: Engineering Inc. Service
Expected Completion Date: June 1995
Estimated Cost: $2,048,267
C.6: Long-Term Pavement Performance Evaluation
Title: Long-Term Pavement Performance Laboratory Testing--LAW Engineering
Objective: To provide for long-term pavement performance laboratory testing.
Contractor: LAW Engineering

Estimated Cost: $1,695,234
NCP Category H--R&D Management and Coordination
H.3: Advanced Concepts
Title: Site Integration Program
Objective: To reduce construction time by 50 percent through the use of hierarchical control for the integration of all activities at the work site.
Contractor: Department of Commerce
Expected Completion Date: April 1995
Estimated Costs: $4,035,000
