Technology Applications

The following are brief descriptions of selected items that have been completed recently by state and federal highway units in cooperation with the Office of Technology Applications and the Office of Research and Development, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Some items from other sources are included when they are of special interest to highway agencies. All publications are available from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). In some cases, limited copies of publications are available from the R&T Report Center.

When ordering from NTIS, include the NTIS PB number (or publication number) and the publication title. For customers outside the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the cost is double the listed price. Address requests to:

National Technical Information Service 5285 Port Royal Road Springfield, VA 22161 Telephone: (703) 487-4650

Requests for items available from the R&T Report Center should be addressed to:

Air-Void Analyzer Evaluation

Publication No. FHWA-SA-96-062

The air-void analyzer (AVA) is a device for testing a sample of fresh concrete to obtain data regarding air-void parameters of air content, specific surface, and spacing factor. The evaluation compared the results of the AVA with results obtained by the ASTM C457 modified point-counter method on hardened concrete from the same batch. From 26 AVA tests, the following observations were made: AVA air content was always approximately 2 percent less than the air content as determined by the pressure meter and by ASTM C457. The spacing factor was about the same for AVA and ASTM C457. The specific surface calculated by AVA was greater than that determined by ASTM C457; AVA indicated smaller air voids. AVA demonstrated it can provide information that characterizes the air-void system, and under certain conditions, the system can be applied in quality control and assessment of concrete mixes.

The NTIS number is PB96-192745. The cost is $31 for a paper copy or $14 for the report on microfiche.

Proceedings: International Conference on Design and Construction of Deep Foundations

Volume 1 - Publication No. FHWA-SA-96-084
Volume 2 - Publication No. FHWA-SA-96-085
Volume 3 - Publication No. FHWA-SA-96-086

These documents provide the proceedings of the conference, which was held Dec. 6 to 8, 1994, in Orlando, Fla. The conference was co-sponsored by FHWA, the International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC), Deep Foundation Institute (DFI), Transportation Research Board (TRB), and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

Volume 1 contains the presentations of 11 internationally known keynote speakers. The NTIS number is PB97-103972. The cost is $49 for a paper copy or $19.50 for the report on microfiche.

Volumes 2 and 3 contain 115 papers selected from the call for papers. These papers were written by more than 300 authors and co-authors from 23 countries. The NTIS number for Volume 2 is PB97-103964, and the cost is $100 for a paper copy and $35 for microfiche. The NTIS number for Volume 3 is PB97-103980, and the cost is $85 for a paper copy and $25 for microfiche.

Traffic Control Systems Handbook

Publication No. FHWA-SA-95-032

This handbook updates the 1985 edition and broadens the scope to include intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technology and concepts. The handbook serves as a basic reference in planning, designing, and implementing traffic control systems; provides an updated compendium of existing traffic control technology for the advanced designer and user; describes existing and evolving traffic control technology; and recommends decision-making processes in the selection, implementation, and operation of a traffic control system.

The NTIS number is PB96-192356. The cost is $85 for a paper copy or $25 for the report on microfiche.

CBEAR Bearing Capacity Analysis of Shallow Foundations Users Manual

Publication No. FHWA-SA-94-034

This manual introduces an IBM/PC/XT microcomputer program (CBEAR) that was designed to analyze the general bearing capacity of shallow foundations. CBEAR can analyze strip, rectangular, and square foundations, and it considers the effects of such influences as embedment, inclined and eccentric loads, sloping ground surface, and surcharge. The program incorporates the general bearing-capacity equations and factors suggested by Meyerhof (1963) and Vesic (1975).

The NTIS number is PB94-210869. The cost is $31 for a paper copy or $14 for the report on microfiche.
