Every year for the past 44 years, our nation has recognized the importance of our national transportation system to our national security and economic well-being with a special day or (since 1962) week. In accordance with a joint resolution of Congress, the week that includes the third Friday in May is designated National Transportation Week (NTW). NTW provides opportunities for the transportation community to join together to promote greater public awareness of the importance and benefits of transportation and to encourage youth to consider transportation-related careers.

This year, more than 100 events will be held across the country to celebrate NTW. These events include a reception for members of Congress, the official opening of Interstate 15 in Utah, and transportation "career days" in schools throughout the nation. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is sponsoring an event at the National Press Club and has invited former secretaries of transportation to attend. The Federal Aviation Administration is conducting a program, including equipment displays and exhibits, for 700 school children in Maryland.

In addition, DOT's Garrett A. Morgan Technology and Transportation Futures Program will sponsor a number of events and outreach programs for young people. This year, about 300 elementary schools will participate in the NTW poster contest for fifth graders. Prizes will be awarded to three winning artists and their schools for the best posters based on the theme of "Transportation - It Keeps America Moving."
