A new $2,884,216 grant from the Federal Highway Administration to replace the Canvas Bridge near Summersville, WV, will ensure that Route 39 can accommodate growing traffic levels, U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta announced today.

"This funding will help to improve a vital link over the Gauley River that is important for residents, visitors and the region's economy," said Secretary Mineta. "As our economy continues to grow, the Bush Administration continues investing in projects that fuel opportunity and prosperity in communities across America."

The bridge, built in 1963, carries two Route 39 lanes over the Gauley River and the upper reach of a large flood control and recreational reservoir. The bridge currently carries an average of 5,300 vehicles per day, 11 percent of which are trucks. Traffic is expected to increase to 9,300 vehicles per day by 2021.

"President Bush knows that transportation investments are ensuring that goods make it to store shelves, and helping West Virginians get to their jobs and home again safely and on time," said Federal Highway Administrator Mary E. Peters.
