Project Details

Project Description:

This project is to identify the necessary interfaces for two-way communication of traffic signal information between the traffic signal controller and a mobile device, provide the concept of operations for the use of the interfaces, and develop prototypes of the interfaces using signal controllers from two different manufacturers. The interfaces and prototypes shall be for use by the connected vehicle applications that require signal phase and timing (SPaT) and its related messages.

Goals

The key project objectives are listed below:

(1) Develop a two-way interface specification between two signal controller brands and Roadside Equipment (RSE) that will send signal phase and timing data from the traffic signal controller to mobile devices and receive Basic Safety Messages and Requests for Service from mobile devices using the National Transportation Control Interface Protocol (NTCIP) 1202 and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J2735 standards.

(2) Test this interface at Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in the Transportation Operations Laboratory: Connected Vehicle Highway Testbed.

(3) Procure, configure, and deploy 50 signal phase and timing (SPaT) interface devices at Safety Pilot and other affiliated testbeds.

Deliverables

Deliverable Name:
Configure and deploy one model (Econolite) of an intelligent traffic signal controller and signal phase and timing (SPaT) interface devices at six intersections on Fuller Road as part of Safety Pilot.
Deliverable Type:
Hardware
Deliverable Description:
Procure, configure, and provide technical (onsite and offsite) support to successfully deploy signal phase and timing (SPaT) interface devices at six intersections at the Safety Pilot Model Deployment in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This also includes the latest version 3 of 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications equipment.
