BAA Generates Strong Response, Eight Proposals Funded to Leverage SHRP2 Safety Data

The Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Office of Safety Research and Development is dedicated to improving the safety of the Nation’s roadways through innovative research. In support of this goal, the office posted a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) soliciting proposals that can leverage the Second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) safety data to support traffic safety improvements on our roads. We were very encouraged by the large number of proposals received and the diverse participation from State departments of transportation (DOTs). Ultimately, eight proposals were funded for Phase I. Six of these proposals were funded as contracts with FHWA at $100,000 per project and two were funded as cooperative agreements because the proposal included funding support from a State partner. In total, 12 different State DOTs were proposed as partners across the projects, including Alabama, California, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. As a BAA allows for and encourages diversity in the topic areas proposed, we are funding projects that will explore speed and safety relationships, high visibility enforcement, intersection design, rural intersection safety, work zones, vulnerable road users, and crash surrogates. The period of performance for these projects ranges from 9 to 18 months. After this time, some projects will be selected to continue to Phase II, which will include a more indepth analysis leading to a real-world highway safety improvement.
