Trump’s Transportation Department Delivers $407.7M to Rebuild Bridges in Rural America
Funding will get dirt moving and repair 119 bridges across 12 states
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) today announced a $407.7 million investment in rural infrastructure. From Alaska to West Virginia, 12 states will receive much-needed funding to deliver 119 safe and reliable bridges to rural communities.
“Thanks to President Trump’s America First agenda, rural America is no longer forgotten. The hardworking men and women who serve as the backbone are finally getting the big, beautiful infrastructure they deserve,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “These bridges will ensure smaller communities have the reliable bridges they need to fuel our economy and connect American families to schools, offices, and hospitals.”
“The Trump Administration is investing in rural America again,” said FHWA Administrator Sean McMaster. “Funding for these projects will build and repair 119 bridges—saving time, money, and revitalizing key routes for the movement of commerce.”
Under Secretary Duffy, the program’s revamped criteria prioritized President Trump’s America First agenda and eliminated wasteful social justice and environmental requirements.
FHWA’s Competitive Highway Bridge Program (CHBP) focuses on repairing and replacing bridges in rural communities—less than 115 individuals per square mile. CHBP’s "bridge bundling" approach groups small projects into a single award, saving time and taxpayer money.
Iowa, Maine, South Dakota, and West Virginia will each receive $65 million to be used on the following projects in their states.
- Iowa’s Better Bridges Brighter Opportunity and Bridges to Prosperity projects are critical to the state’s economic health and the transport of agricultural products.
- Maine’s Critical Connections: Preserving Mobility for Rural Communities and the Interstate 95 Decks in Distress projects to fix bridges in poor condition and better link communities to economic opportunity and job centers.
- South Dakota’s SD 44 Platte-Winner Bridge Replacements project to link communities across the Missouri River.
- West Virginia’s West Kanawha County Bridge Bundle Project that includes the Dunbar Toll Bridge and the Kanawha Turnpike I-64 Overpass, both vital links over the Kanawha River.
More information is available on CHBP Fiscal Years 2024 and 2025 selected projects.
