Arlington Memorial Trail

Public Scoping

Arlington County and EFLHD are soliciting public comments on the proposed Arlington Memorial Trail Project. Please review the public scoping flyer that is available by clicking the document at the bottom of this page.

During project development, EFLHD and Arlington County identified two alternatives (Alternative 1 and Alternative 2) for the approximately 1.1-mile trail alignment. Preliminary designs of these alternatives are also available in the links at bottom of the page. Arlington County and EFLHD are proposing to carry forward Alternative 2.

Alternative 1 would result in variable trail width. The trail would be 10-foot wide except between Station 118+00 and 120+00 where it would be reduced to between 6 and 8 feet for approximately 175 feet so that relocation of the Arlington Cemetery Wall would not be needed. Between Station 150+00 and 152+00, the trail would be situated further onto ANC property, resulting in greater amount of tree removal.

Alternative 2 would provide for a consistent 10-foot-wide trail. To allow for this, approximately 175 feet of the Arlington Cemetery Wall would be relocated 10 feet between Station 118+00 and 120+00.  At Station 150+00 and 152+00, the trail would be situated closer to the VA DOT right-of-way reducing the number of trees removed.

Please provide comments via email to FHWA at eden.jemal@dot.gov; or by mail to Eden Jemal Federal Highway Administration, USDOT, 22001 Loudoun County Parkway, Building E2, Suite 200, Ashburn, VA 20147 by February 24, 2023.
