Federal Highway Administration, Central Federal Lands Highway Division (FHWA-CFLHD) in cooperation with Chaffee County, the U.S. Forest Service, Pike and San Isabel National Forests improved Cottonwood Pass Road. The project began at the summit, where the CO FLAP 209(1) Cottonwood Pass project ended, and continued 18.5 miles east to County Road 321 at the Town of Buena Vista western limit. The upper 0.5 mile section was widened and shifted into the cut slope to avoid an embankment failure slipout, address failing guardrail, and to provide a rockfall storage area. Rehabilitation was done for the remaining 18 miles, including subgrade stabilization; rock scaling, guardrail replacement, select culvert replacement and installation, signing and striping, pulverization, and asphalt. Additionally, a 5-foot wide bike lane was built on both sides of the road, from County Road 342 to 321. These bike lanes connect with existing bike lanes within the Town of Buena Vista.
