The Federal Highway Administration Central Federal Lands Division (FHWA CFLHD), in partnership with Trinity County and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), is conducting a study to identify and prioritize improvement projects on several roads within Trinity County that provide recreational access into the Trinity Alps Wilderness.
Ten road corridors of varying lengths and conditions are being considered as part of the study. Most of the road corridors are managed and maintained by the county up until a certain mileage point, at which point they are managed and maintained by the USFS. Anticipated improvements will focus on improved safety and could include the following; roadway reconditioning, drainage improvements, improved signage, trailhead parking area improvements, road surface improvements, slope stabilization in spot locations, and rockfall mitigation.
This planning effort will allow Trinity County to define recommended improvements along each route, estimate costs, gather public input and preferences, and consider opportunities to coordinate or pair projects. In addition, planning efforts will identify possible federal, state, and local funding sources to implement improvements.
