Project Details

Project Description:

The objective of this research project is to evaluate the effectiveness of low-cost, speed-activated dynamic curve warning systems on speeding and safety on horizontal curves in rural roadways. Research is being conducted under a cooperative agreement with the Center for Transportation Research and Education, Iowa State University.

Deliverables

Deliverable Name:
Evaluation of Dynamic Speed Feedback Signs on Curves: A National Demonstration Project
Deliverable Type:
Research report or guidelines
Deliverable Description:
This report discusses treatments that can potentially reduce speeds and speeding-related crash risks on rural horizontal curves. This report describes the effectiveness of dynamic signs that alert drivers to changes in roadway conditions and that provide those drivers with recommended speeds to negotiate a curve safely. The effectiveness of these signs was determined based on field analysis in 22 locations.
