Project Description: 

This research tested emerging navigation technologies in a simulated environment that could lead to better assessment of future navigation technology and improved methods for roadway design. The proposed Integrated GPS/INU Simulator for Enhanced Safety consisted of the development of five modules: the Vehicle Dynamics Simulator, the global positioning system/inertial navigation unit (GPS/INU) simulator; the Traffic Simulator; the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) Simulator; and the Scenario Warning Generator. All these modules were integrated to create an environment that allowed the researchers to study the relationship between vehicle dynamics and roadway geometry, and to provide an integrated design, test, and evaluation tool for developing advanced concept subsystems to enhance vehicle safety at the vehicle and network levels. Several prototype GPS/INU systems were proposed to cross-validate the integrated simulation environment and to explore new concepts to enhance vehicle safety in conjunction with or without the existing IntelliDrive environment.

Goals:

The development of an integrated simulation environment, which includes a new global positioning system/inertial navigation unit (GPS/INU) simulator; a commercial vehicle dynamics simulator; CarSim software (adapted for this application); a commercial communications simulator (NCTUns); and a commercial traffic simulator (such as VisSim).
